Right now, queer community members need safe spaces more than ever.
Bradley is doing their part to make sure this campus is one.
October is LGBTQ+ History Month, and a substantial queer population constitutes Bradley’s student body. On Thursday, queer coalition hosted a flag raising at the circle of pride, showing students that they’re not only welcome, but encouraged to speak out on campus.
In addition, the university has added a “Legacy Wall” to the Cullom-Davis Library. The wall is an interactive exhibit that features and describes LGBTQ+ trailblazers and the history of the community.
The wall went up on Monday and will remain open to the public until Nov. 4.
In the grand scheme of things, the United States is not a kind place to members of the queer community right now. Even in places with friendly laws, rhetoric from hateful politicians creates an environment that feels unsafe.
Conservatives have demonized people to the point where they can’t feel safe inside their own home. Their hate provokes everyday Americans to enact the same violence they advocate for.
Bradley has sent a clear message: everyone is welcome here. As long as they keep doing so, LGBTQ+ voices will be here to stay.
