Bradley eases concerns surrounding MAP Grant funding

During Christmas break, recipients of the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant received an email from Betsy Hull, Bradley’s Vice President of Finance and Administration, stating that the state of Illinois would be reducing MAP Grant funding for its spring semester recipients.

Recipients were understandably concerned, as the decision could have affected tuition refund amounts and their potential status as Braves. Weeks passed before an update came a day before the semester began.

On Jan. 21, Hull reached out again, but this time with more encouraging news. The email informed recipients that despite the reduction in state funding, Bradley would cover the shortfalls of every student impacted.

In our current economy and political climate, every dollar counts. The institution’s gesture is an appreciated show of good faith.

A few days after the good news, college students around the country received another scare when it was announced that President Donald Trump planned to freeze federal funding for grants and loans.

When the news broke, it was unclear as to whether the FAFSA would be affected. With Trump’s rhetoric around dismantling the Department of Education, students were rightfully afraid.

In the following days, students learned that FAFSA would not be affected by the freeze, but the momentary scare again shed light on the value of Bradley’s gesture.
