After working for our high school newspapers, applying for positions at The Scout seemed like a no-brainer.

When we accepted our roles as copy editors, we had no idea how much this job would mean to us.

There are so many people who still respond, “I didn’t know we had a campus newspaper,” when we say where we work, which is crazy because it’s been such a huge part of our lives. Between countless hours spent in the office, sending out text messages reminding you guys to clock in on time and writing dozens of articles, we have had an absolute blast.

Every Thursday, there has not been a minute that went by where we weren’t laughing together, and for that we can’t thank any of you guys enough. The way we have joked around, critiqued each other’s work and talked freely and deeply is a blessing.

Becoming editor-in-chief and managing editor, and then transitioning to co-editors, was a challenging task. The idea of being in charge of six or more people was initially overwhelming, but there was never a doubt in our minds that we could do it.

The reason why? If we were chosen, it was for a reason. Which means you all should be confident in your ability to continue growing as we hand off the reins. We chose you all because we have seen your work ethic and passion. We believe in you wholeheartedly.

Next year, you will be led by two incredible people. We couldn’t be happier to leave you with Rome and Latif to guide you as you continue your journeys here.

Rome, meeting you has been so wonderful. It’s honestly fate that you were in one of our CLA groups and then met us at the job fair. Hiring you has been, hands down, one of the best decisions we made during our tenure. If we are being honest, we would not have made it through the past two years without you by our side.

You are highly intelligent, imaginative and unique. You bring a raw, infectious energy to The Scout, and you have led the Voice section with a critical and tangible voice. We are so proud of you, and we know you are going to be excellent at everything you do.

Latif, you’ve done nothing but grow during the time we’ve known you. You are a powerhouse in sports, writing, editing and managing the section like a pro. Your talents are outstanding, and you bring an unrivaled creativity to your writing.

We are excited to see all of the new ideas you will bring to this great publication. You have already mentioned a few of them to us, and we know that they will continue making The Scout the best job on campus.

This job has its ups and downs, with figuring out how you want to be a fair and fun leader and navigating interpersonal conflicts that may arise. But learning to lean on one other is one of the most important parts of these positions.

Without a doubt, we wouldn’t have wanted to manage the staff without each other. Our partnership was based on mutual respect and communication, and we’re grateful to now have a lifelong friendship because of it.

You two will be exceptional co-editors, not because you learned from the best, but because you have proved to be amazing journalists and natural leaders.

It’s no exaggeration to say that we have become a little family at The Scout, and the bonds we have created will never be forgotten. We have all helped each other become better writers and editors, but we’ve also become friends along the way. We will miss each and every one of you.

If you ever need us, we are just a call away. Keep up the amazing work.

And remember: Be what? Be you!

Signing off,

Maddy and Anaiah

2023-25 Co-Editors-in-Chief
