As Homecoming festivities took over campus this week, there have been traditional events such as the Painting of the Lydia’s and the pageant show. There is also one event that changes each year.

This homecoming, ACBU organized a different type of field day. A “Survivor” themed event with a variety of mini-games and relay races filled Olin Quad on Saturday.

Eleven organizations contributed to the event as passersby attempted to win prizes.  Tables featured the chance to make an “Immunity Idol,” or a friendship bracelet, trivia games, making first aid kits, painting and more.

Contestants won raffle tickets through participation and winning the games. The tickets were collected and an online spin wheel determined the winners. Smaller prizes included rubber ducks and bracelets, while the largest prizes were gift cards or a camp stove set.

Students could play as they walked through the quad or stay for the entire event.

“We were actually trying to see another friend of ours, he’s doing a theater class … We wanted to check that out, but then we saw this,” Thomas Droppert, a senior computer science major and international student, said.

Droppert enjoys the extracurricular activities provided by ACBU because there are no events like this at his school in the Netherlands.

Freshman Margaret Thompson also enjoyed the games, particularly those from the Bradley Skates Club and Pi Lambda Theta, the education honor society.

“It’s a good weekend activity if you’re bored and I think it would be even more fun if you had a couple of friends to go with,” Thompson said.

The event was cut two hours short as thunderstorms rolled into the area, but about 16 prizes were handed out to participants.

Cassie Keller, a senior entrepreneurship major and Homecoming Coordinator, was disappointed they had to shut the event down early.

“We didn’t get to provide as much experience as we wanted with the limited time, but those who participated said they enjoyed it,” Keller said.

She also said that next year’s organizers may change the theme again, but the event will still revolve around games, challenges and food.

The Homecoming fun will continue at 5 p.m. on Friday on Olin Quad for Lighting of the B.
