Over the summer, the Bradley Student Senate stayed rooted in student advocacy.
As a new semester begins, the senate is also starting a new chapter.
Junior sports communication major Peyton Coburn starts her first semester as student body president with four pillars in mind: academics, athletics, safety and community.
“The senate’s main goals are to help develop effective communication for students, continuing to push for safety on campus and to help make sure academic quality is at its finest,” Coburn said.
While the senate is working to improve the students’ experience at Bradley, Nathan Ola, a sophomore mechanical engineering major and director of administration for the senate, highlighted some of the senate’s internal goals.
“Our main goals this semester would be to create a more tightly-knit environment within the senate, be smart about the way we gather input from students regarding campus-wide issues and push out more legislation regarding major issues,” Ola said.
To achieve these goals, the senate relies heavily on communication from fellow senators and the student body as a whole.
“Our plan to achieve these goals is to listen to student concerns, advocate for change among senior leadership and to ensure change occurs for the better,” Coburn said. “We always want to see Bradley continue to grow and become its best self.”
“Accomplishing all of these goals comes down to effective communication,” Ola added. “If all of us within the senate openly express our thoughts and concerns to each other with open minds, we’ll be able to accomplish these goals we have set.”
In addition to operational goals, the senate is also looking inward at its remaining seats.
Currently, open positions include three freshman senators, a senior senator, a graduate senator and five at-large senators. Hoping to fill these open positions within the next couple of months, the senate is encouraging anyone interested to reach out for more information.
Throughout the semester, the senate will be holding tabling events around campus, along with meetings available to the public every Monday at 5 p.m., where students are able to ask questions and voice their concerns.
