J-term is making a possible comeback in 2022, with courses planned in London and Paris.

The last J-term was in 2020, and a May term 2020 was planned but had to be canceled due to the university sending students home at the start of the pandemic.

According to Kathleen Stinson, administrative coordinator of study abroad, the program would depend on the local COVID-19 regulations. She said that England requires a 10-day quarantine while France requires a seven-day quarantine.

“If those quarantine restrictions are still in place by September, we would have to cancel J-term 2022 as well,” Stinson said. “Our J-term and May-term trips are just a little over two weeks … A seven-day or 10-day quarantine would just make those trips pointless.”

Stinson said the Study Abroad Office is looking closely at the local regulations in Europe and hoping to see restrictions loosen by summer.

However, Stinson said that a semester-long study abroad has different results.

While certain countries aren’t allowing students to enter, such as Australia and New Zealand, and other countries, such as Italy, are shutting down again due to the virus, Stinson said that study abroad organizations can work around any quarantine restrictions.

“All of our organizations have been very proactive regarding the virus and keeping students safe and making sure that everybody follows the guidelines of whatever country they’re in,” Stinson said. “Semester study abroad is possible depending on the country.”

Pre-registration for J-term 2022 will be open to students from April 1 to Sep. 4.
