Students gathered at the Garrett Cultural Center on Wednesday to partake in Common Ground’s Queer Media Night.
Common Ground, Bradley’s LGBTQ+ and ally organization, hosted Queer Media Night to give participants a place to review and discuss their favorite queer media. Media categories consisted of music, movies or TV shows with positive representation of the queer community.
“This is a space to share and show other people special queer media that each person [in the club] likes. It is also to share the love of all these different [multitudes] of media,” Madilyn Harris, Common Ground president, said.
The event sought out entrants inclined to discuss and interact with different types of media while creating a safe and supporting environment for everyone who attended.
The event also served as an opportunity for attendees to learn about different queer and LGBTQ+ allies in pop-culture, specifically in music. A highlight was popular music artist Rick Astley’s video performing a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.”
Willow Marshall, Common Ground’s treasurer, was hopeful that this event would reoccur in future semesters.
“Based on how tonight goes, we will more or less see where things go from there [regarding] the event. I do feel like it will be a reoccurring favorite event that [we] host more in the future,” Marshall, a freshman actuarial science business major, said.
Besides hosting social events, the club created a “community closet,” in which students of the LGBTQ+ community can acquire donated clothes. The donations are for students who need gender or sexuality reaffirming clothing so they can easily access empowering outfits.
“We are trying to promote community closet more; it is essentially a clothing exchange,” Harris said. “You can donate clothing to our box in the library, we try to empty it semi-regularly. You can also visit our office to get clothing as well.”
Common Ground has an online inventory to see what clothing items are available.
