Students compete at Sings and Wings

Campus Outreach hosted a lip-sync battle Sings and Wings Monday. The event took place in Lydia’s Lounge at 10 p.m., and the organization served chicken wings and pizza to students.

Attending students received one raffle ticket, while battle participants earned two chances. Participants had the opportunity to win prizes such as Bluetooth speakers and gift cards to Subway and Starbucks.

“The vision behind this event was to start the semester off with a really fun opportunity for students to come and eat some free food and have a blast performing in front of their peers,” Daniel Soriano, a hospitality and catalytic events team leader for Campus Outreach, said. “We [were] looking to have a fun time and hopefully make some new friends.”

The competition included more than 15 performances, with songs ranging from “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton to “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne.

“My favorite performance of the night was ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s’ theme song,” freshman civil engineering major Henry Umlauf said. “I would definitely recommend going to see these events because they have a great atmosphere and really made Monday a better day of the week.”

The runner-up, a group of boys singing “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, and the winner, sophomore interactive media major Blake Brewer with “Candyman” by Christina Aguilera, compete again for a $100 Buffalo Wild Wings gift card Wednesday night.

“I was pumped to win, and everyone was cheering for me,” Brewer said. “I have such a passion for performing, and I loved that I got to see everyone’s reactions first hand.”

Campus Outreach is an interdenominational Christian ministry with an emphasis on outward focus.

“This organization and its people truly build meaningful relationships with one another,” Lauren Jones, co-leader of housekeeping and catalyst events, said. “The people I met in the organization as a freshman made me feel welcomed at Bradley and truly made me start caring about others as well.”

Campus Outreach began in Alabama in 1978, and it started in the central Illinois region in 2007. Bradley’s region also includes Eastern Illinois University and Monmouth College.

“[Campus Outreach] has grown at Bradley so much since I got involved near the end of my first semester of college,” senior communication major Jordan Nelson said. “It’s been incredible to watch people’s lives being changed drastically forever.”
