Untold stories exist on every campus, but at Bradley, a new platform seeks to give them a voice.
The Bradley University Podcast debuted on March 27 with the first of three episodes so far, introducing co-hosts Angie Cooksy, vice president of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Communications, and Ben Jedd, assistant vice president of Marketing and Communications.
“[Angie and I] both went to Bradley, we both love Bradley and now we both get to tell stories at Bradley,” Jedd said. “Our job is really to tell the story of the university, and we wanted to do that.”
New episodes are released weekly and run between 15 and 30 minutes. Each one spotlights a story from within the Bradley community for the Bradley community.
“We are a place with nearly 5,000 students, 1,000 faculty and staff [members] and thousands of alumni, which means we have a lot of stories to tell,” Cooksy said. “Being a small part of telling those stories is a privilege I’m grateful for.”
Cooksy and Jedd began planning the podcast last semester, leading them to discover Hilltop Studio, a digital recording space located in University Hall. Bill Duncan, the director of Hilltop Studio, soon joined the team as the show’s producer.
“I got an email one day in January, and it was from Ben [Jedd],” Duncan said. “He introduced himself and said, ‘We’d like to meet with you and talk about setting up a podcast,’ and I thought it was a great idea.”
From a technical standpoint, the podcast setup is simple, requiring three to four microphones and access to editing software. Duncan, as producer, also found the podcast’s intro and outro music, which came from an unexpected source.
“[Funny] story about that: my six-year-old grandson created that piece of music,” Duncan said.
Looking ahead, Duncan hopes the podcast’s production will eventually be managed by students. Jedd also spoke about increasing student involvement as the show evolves.
“We just want to build something that is going to help this community grow,” Jedd said. “As we’re getting more stories out there, we would like to get more student stories and more students involved in the podcast.”
