With summer just around the corner, Fresh Slice hosted the Build a Bowl event on Monday evening as its final event of the semester.
As the name suggests, the event allowed attendees to create Chipotle-style burrito bowls from a selection of brown and white rice, beans, chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, salsa and guacamole.
Build a Bowl was our little rendition of Chipotle,” Divinity Bradboy-Dorsey, junior marketing major and Fresh Slice social media coordinator, said. “People came, and they made a homemade Chipotle bowl.”
The Build a Bowl event was decided upon last semester due to Chipotle’s popularity. Fresh Slice wanted the event to feel more personal to attendees.
“It was just around the time Chipotle was really popular,” Miracle McClendon, senior nutrition major and Fresh Slice president, said. “We wanted to make it a little bit more personal, kind of like a DIY thing.”
Fresh Slice is a hospitality organization that serves food at many of its events, aiming to educate students on preparing food for themselves and seeking sustainable resources in today’s world.
Build a Bowl served as a way of showing students how easy it is to make a burrito bowl from scratch rather than ordering takeout.
“We all collectively love Chipotle,” McClendon said. “[But] we figured there’s a simple way to make them in your dorm and not spend as much money.”
While no more events are planned for the remainder of the semester, Fresh Slice hopes to have more students involved in the fall and will be working to raise money for the organization.
