The ongoing renovations of University Hall (UHall) are intended to be more than a beautification of Bradley’s campus.

It is also an improvement to the overall student experience.

Starting out as an idea from Bradley President James Shadid, UHall will soon have a new look to it.

“I think it is important for prospective students and parents to see that we are enhancing the residential options on this campus and also are focused on creating modern spaces,” Shadid said. “It’s where students get their start, so improving it has a direct, daily and large impact on their experience.”

These renovations will bring more gathering spaces to first-year students living in UHall while also improving Lydia’s Lounge.

Included in the new spaces are an outdoor patio and a kitchen for students to cook their own meals.

As for Lydia’s Lounge, students can expect it to be more spacious, include more seating and new TVs.

“I think it will be a very positive experience, particularly for our freshmen coming in,” Kim Green,  planning supervisor in the facilities management department, said. “It affords them some social space, so it’s not quite as overwhelming as it can be if they’re cast amongst all of the older students.”

Currently, the renovations have largely been concentrated on Lydia’s Lounge and the unoccupied lower-level of UHall. Once the Spring 2026 semester has concluded and students are moved out, further advancements can be made.

Students can expect these renovations to be completed by the beginning of the Fall 2026 semester, with an additional second phase of renovations set to be completed by the Spring 2027 semester.

“It’s going to be such that when students walk up to the residential area, they feel energized, they see success and feel success,” Shadid said. “We want to create that feeling for them everyday.”

In addition to the renovations to UHall, the Gateway and Clarissa Court projects are also in the works.

The Gateway project will bring a new entrance to Bradley located at the corner of Main and University Street, while the Clarissa court project will bring an outdoor recreation center located along alumni quad.

Included in the outdoor recreation center will be pickleball courts, a band shelter and new parking spaces.

“The Gateway project is going to hopefully say, ‘you’ve arrived at Bradley’ and really define some of our borders of the university,” Green said. “The other one, the Clarissa Court, is going to hopefully bring a lot of excitement and activity to that corner of campus.”

These projects are part of the administration’s goal in improving the overall student experience at Bradley. With these renovations, the administration wants to send a message to students that their concerns are being addressed.

“I think it shows a commitment by this administration and the campus at large to their experience,” Shadid said. “It shows a long-term commitment to improve the campus for the student experience, and I think it also shows we’re listening to our students and using their feedback to guide our priorities.”
