Burns, Lemek shine as golf heads to MVC championships

The Braves were back in action this past weekend on the golf course as both the men’s and women’s golf teams were swinging away at their respective tournaments. Seniors Lyle Burns and Danielle Lemek were the top finishers for the men and women.

Burns capped off his Bradley career by claiming his third-straight medal Monday. He shot three over par for a total score of 219 during the tournament. In addition to his impressive weekend performance, Burns was also honored as the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) golfer of the week.

“I felt confident because I had been playing well, and I am very comfortable playing Weaver Ridge, as it is our home course,” Burns said.

Lemek recorded a 79 shot performance despite the weather-shortened tournament. The senior has been compiling a steady season and heads to the MVC Championship with the third lowest stroke average in Bradley history.

“I have a round here and there that has been pretty high,” Lemek said. “What I want to really focus moving into the first day of conference is to be super focused and prove to myself and others that I have what it takes to win another conference title.”

With conference games looming in the horizon, both players must prove themselves during each of their tournaments.

“For conference, I am going into the tournament with a chip on my shoulder,” Lemek said. “I want to prove myself as being one of the best to step foot in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Burns said he feels confident his team will be able to perform at a high level throughout the remainder of the season.

“I think it says that we can compete at the conference championship and that we are trending in the right direction heading into the biggest event of the year,” Burns said.

Both Burns and Lemek take to the links for weekend action. The MVC Women’s Championship is April 17 through April 19, and the men will play in the Beu/Mussato Invitational at Macomb this weekend and compete for the conference title the following weekend.
