Staff Picks: Favorite Uniforms in sports

When The Scout’s Sports staff gets together to play video games, we’re the kind of people who take longer to choose our uniforms than we do to play the games.

In last week’s debut Staff Picks column, we discussed our favorite venues to watch a game. This week, we picked our favorite uniforms in sports.

My favorite has to be the Kelly green uniforms that the Philadelphia Eagles wore in the 1980s. The shade of green is impeccable: dark enough to where it’s not too loud and tacky but bright enough that it almost shines under light. The simplistic monochrome eagle wings on the helmet are much better than the Eagles’ current helmet, which is more detailed than it needs to be. The Eagle’s current aquamarine-colored uniforms do not fit the city; reserve that for teams that play in Florida or Seattle. Kelly green, like Philadelphia, is classic and needs to be brought back.

Matthew Lucas, Contributor: St. Louis Cardinals ‘Victory’ blues

In recent years, Major League Baseball has been embracing powder-blue uniforms, but, try as they might, nobody can do it better than the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals’ “Victory” Blues are covered in powder-blue from head-to-toe, while still using the bright red they’re known for. This classic keeps the two redbirds perched on a bat, with the St. Louis script underneath it. This modernized version of a true vintage design just makes me smile from ear-to-ear every time it’s worn. With the “Victory” Blues on, I can’t help but cheer for them.

Larry Larson, Sports Editor: San Diego Padres brown home pinstripes

While looking for my favorite uniform in sports, it was impossible for me to look past baseball. Between classic pinstripes, vibrant alternates and aforementioned throwback uniforms, no sport does it better.

However, one team has combined nearly all those categories to create the perfect set of uniforms: the San Diego Padres.

The Pads have donned a number of colors over the years from bright yellow and orange to navy blue to camouflage. Prior to the 2020 season, the team embraced its colorful and arguably ugly past to create three sets of getups, all of which feature shades of brown and gold.

My favorite is their home whites that feature brown pinstripes with “Padres” text piped in gold along brown caps with a gold “SD.”

Hernan Gutierrez, Sports Reporter: Chicago Red Stars “The Neighborhood Kit”

Soccer kits all across the globe are known to showcase the culture in the country and region a team belongs to. Club kits especially need to be creative in paying homage to its city’s roots. In 2020, the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League unveiled a new secondary kit that does this exceptionally well.

The team dubbed it “The Neighborhood Kit,” which displays the Chicago flag over the chest. The flag’s blue bars are made up of the names of all 77 neighborhoods in the city, showing that the team doesn’t belong to a particular side and that all Chicagoans are welcomed.

On the back, the city’s skyline is shown across the bottom of the jersey, also made up of the names of the 77 neighborhoods.

This kit has a great spin on displaying a flag that Chicagoans find so much pride in while also including the diverse neighborhoods that make up the city. It’s a great example of how simplicity can work. The men’s soccer club in Chicago needs to take note.

Joey Wright, Assistant Sports Editor: Dallas Cowboys road blue uniforms

It’s a harder task than you might think to consider a favorite uniform across every sport – there are simply so many to choose from! Even within Dallas, the Rangers’ red alternates and the Stars’ “victory green” jerseys could have easily gotten the nod.

But it is impossible to ignore the beauty of the Dallas Cowboys road blue uniforms. Use the word “road” loosely – they typically only wear them a handful of times each season because teams usually opt to wear colors at home. The dark shade of navy blue is perfectly contrasted by the silver and white striping, while the shades of silver on the helmet, jersey and pants match perfectly.

Compared to the traditional home uniforms, which are heavy in history but light in design continuity, this is not only the best Cowboys set but among the best in the league.
