Women’s track and field gets first individual winner

The women’s indoor track season is well under way and the Braves are having strong showings.
Saturday, the Braves ran in the Jack Jennett Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where junior Mary Goldkamp picked up her first victory of the season.
Goldkamp finished ahead of the pack in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:15, winning by less than two seconds over UNI’s Molly Cashman.
The Braves finished the day with 11 top-10 finishes in both individual and team events.
Sophomore Michelle Hartman earned her second top-10 finish of the season, placing in 10th with a time of 1:39 in the 600-meter run.
The event of the day for the Braves was the 1,000-meter run, where runners senior Katie Nowak, junior Leann Murphy, senior Rachel Brubaker, senior Shannon Seyller and sophomore Sarah Hallstein placed in the top 10.
Nowak finished with a time of 3:02, placing third. Murphy finished in fifth with a time of 3:07. Brubaker was right behind Murphy with a time of 3:12. Seyller finished in eighth in 3:15 and Hallstein rounded out the top 10 in 3:24.
In the mile, freshman Nicole Benson earned her second top-five finish of the season, missing first place by only a second with a time of 5:06. Junior Lauren Fog also finish in the top 10 in 5:21.
Bradley’s 4×400-meter top relay team of Hartman, Benson, Goldkamp and Murphy placed ninth out of the 17 teams with a time of 4:11.
Early in the season, coach David Beauchem said he thinks as the season goes on, his team will only get better.
“We ran very hard in cross country and we are still a little sluggish from how hard we raced at the end of the season,” Beauchem said. “From that however, we have worked very hard to stay in shape over break and through the winter. I think as we get further into the season we will get our race legs back and really have some great performances.”
With the length of the season, the offseason training is very important and no one knows this better than coach Beauchem.
“We have stayed focused on our strength training,” he said. “Once we get some better weather, we will be able to start putting in more track work. As we can do the pace work and speed work, our performances will improve accordingly.”
The Braves next event is the Cyclone Open on Feb. 5 and 6 in Ames, Iowa.
