Greek life looks for campus involvement

New leadership for greek life is bringing with it big plans for campus collaboration and increased social media presence.

“We have a very motivated group right now on exec,” Interfraternity Council (IFC) president Ryan Gutchewsky said. “Same with [Panhellenic Council]; they’re very motivated. I foresee this year being a huge change [with] a lot of positive developments for greek life as a whole.”

Many student organizations are increasingly turning to social media for their public relations needs.
Two upcoming concepts are “Sister Snaps,” a Panhel Snapchat, and a Panhel blog, where sororities can post about various topics.

“Panhel and IFC have both just hit the ground running this year, and Panhellenic is now starting a blog, [on] which every month we’ll have a prompt, and we’re asking sororities to write something,” Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Nancy Schwartz said. “Each month, we’ll feature a different sorority writing on the topic. We’re just trying to create more information about what goes on in our community beyond recruitment and beyond what you typically know about our organizations.”

Also, the respective IFC and Panhel Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts will be combined into single platforms. According to Panhel president Marian Kavanaugh, it will present a unified platform that is easy for students to navigate.

Gutchewsky said two goals he has are to increase the leadership of greek life on campus and to solidify IFC as a respected organization on campus. A greek life newsletter and a town hall are in the beginning stages of development. The greek town hall will act as a sort of open forum, where students can ask questions about greek life and get feedback on important issues.

“The biggest thing we want to do is create more collaboration between not just IFC and Panhel, but with the rest of the community,” Kavanaugh said. “[We want to be] a little more transparent to the rest of Bradley life, because that is one thing I feel like why there is a divide.”

As part of greek life’s efforts to include more of the campus community, Theta Epsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will host the third annual Black History Ceremony tonight in the Garrett Cultural Center. From 6 to 8:30 p.m., students can experience heritage, music and entertainment.
