Team Bradley races for cure

Breast cancer affects thousands of people each year. Director of the Center for Learning Assistance Debbie Fischer and Director of the Lewis J. Burger Center Jessica Chandler are no exception.

Chandler and Fischer put together “Team Bradley” for the 35th anniversary of Peoria’s Race for the Cure on May 9 at 7 a.m. at the Metro Center in Peoria.

“Everybody has a different reason for the passion and a different reason for doing it,” Fischer said regarding her participation in Race for the Cure and other fundraising events for the Susan G. Komen foundation.

Fischer said she and Chandler want the Hilltop to have a hand in this event.

“Our goal is to have Bradley and the Bradley family well-represented,” Fischer said. “We want our team to grow in size.”

Fischer said she “likes to support the national foundation but prefers to know things are going to affect people locally.”

The event will begin with activities, including a survivor’s ceremony. The race, a 5k walk/run or a one-mile long family walk, starts at 8 a.m. Afterwards, there will be a band, according to Fischer.

Registration information can be found at www.bradley.edu/teambradley.

“If [students] can’t be there, they can be a Spirit Walker,” Chandler said. “Spirit Walkers are people who sign-up even though they can’t go.”
Geraniums may be ordered until May 4 from Eileen Benne of the Controller’s Office at Eileen@fsmail.bradley.edu. Participants can pick them up on May 6 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Student Center.

Pink Team Bradley t-shirt are available for $12 by contacting Chandler at jchandler@fsmail.bradley.edu or Fischer at dfischer@fsmail.bradley.edu.

“Proceeds from Team Bradley go to the local Komen affiliate, where funds-local or national-help women get mammograms,” Fischer said.
