Looking ahead to four summer film releases

Graphic by Sarah Irwin

Summer always has some big blockbusters to get excited about, and 2023 is no exception. Big-name directors are releasing films this year and here are a few upcoming releases to look out for.

“Oppenheimer”

Arguably the biggest of these summer flicks is Christopher Nolan’s new film, “Oppenheimer.” This biopic presents the history of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the leading scientist on the Manhattan Project and developer of the atomic bomb. Nolan will most likely employ his usual twist of displaying events out of chronological order, and with his dedication to practical effects, this will most likely be a very immersive experience. This biopic hits theaters on July 21.

“Barbie”

Releasing the same day as “Oppenheimer” comes the newest project directed by Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird” and “Little Women”), “Barbie.” This live-action adaptation of the brand centers around the titular character’s attempt to leave Barbieland on a quest to find true happiness. It’s safe to say that this probably won’t be your standard Barbie movie.

“Asteroid City”

While it’s not as heavily anticipated as the other films on this list, Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” still looks promising. The plot details are pretty thin as of right now, despite already released trailers. This upcoming science fiction comedy-drama follows a stargazing convention set in a small desert town in 1950s America as world-changing events unfold. It has that classic Wes Anderson look, and if you’ve never seen any of his films before, then you’re in for a treat. “Asteroid City” will be in theaters on June 23.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”

Last up is “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the direct sequel to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” from 2018. This continuation sees Miles Morales meeting many other Spider-People and their conflicts regarding certain principles that he holds dear. It carries over the same spectacular animation as the original and it will probably be a lot of fun to watch. This is definitely the most crowd-pleasing blockbuster on this list, so definitely give it a watch if you’re a dedicated fan. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” comes out on June 2.
