Songs to set the mood

There is way more than one mood for Valentine’s Day, and I’ve got the perfect song for every situation:

Mood: “Who needs a Valentine when I’ve got my Galentines?”

Song: “22” by Taylor Swift

With the sudden eruption of Galentine’s Day parties, this mood is becoming all the more relevant. Valentine’s Day is now being interpreted in more ways than the traditional candle-lit dinner date. This song is all about being young, uncertain and most importantly, uncommitted. T-Swift perfectly captures the feelings of freedom and friendships, reminding you to love your squad, your bros, your hoes or your homies.

Mood: “Let’s keep this light but come home with me at the end of the night”

Song: “Heroes” by David Bowie

Straight out of my favorite movie, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (dont @ me), this should be the anthem for keeping it light. This alternative rock song is all about making the most of 24 hours, and it’ll frame your one night stand intentions in the most artsy way imaginable. Instead of you DM-ing “Hey, want me to come thru tonight?” just let Bowie sing, “We can be heroes just for one day.”

Mood: “Could we just DTR already?”

Song: “R U Mine” by Arctic Monkeys

Sometimes subtlety can go straight over someone’s head, and that’s where this song comes in. With a chorus quite literally saying “R U Mine?,” there’s no better way to communicate your intentions. This song is perfect if you’re one of the many people stuck in the limbo land of love that we call “talking.” So go ahead, take your car’s aux cord and play Arctic Monkey’s “R U Mine,” and your person will either a) drop and roll out of the car or b) define that relationship. Either way, this song will get you straight out of those uncharted waters.

Mood: “I’m so in love it’s disgusting (to others)”

Song: “Turning Page” by Sleeping at Last

After you’re done laying out flower petals on your sheets and you’ve finished eating the Bœuf bourguignon or heart shaped Domino’s pizza (no judgment) with your date, have Alexa play “Turning Page.” I’m truly convinced that an Angel tripped from somewhere above and dropped its song sheet for the band Sleeping at Last to find. A lot of songs are sexy, sweet or heart wrenching, but somehow this one is a bone-chillingly beautiful combination of all three. Violins and piano lay a quiet and peaceful foundation for Ryan O’Neal to build his descriptive and passionate lyrics on. A note: If you’re not truly in love when you play this song for your S.O., this will only be extremely awkward, proceed with caution.

Mood: “I’d like to purchase a one-way ticket out of the friend zone”

Song: “Like or Like Like” by Minature Tigers

As previously stated, subtlety gets you nowhere. This is why “Like or Like Like” is going to push you right out of that comfortable friend situation you’re in. Stop stealing glances and hoping they’ll make the first move and play this. The chorus sings, “Tell me what you really feel, do you like or like like me?” With a casual alternative house-band sound to back it up. Yeah you could also play T-Swift’s “You Belong With Me,” but why be mainstream when you can go with your own flow?

Mood: “It’s not me, it’s you”

Song: “Gotta Go My Own Way” from High School Musical 2

So, Feb. 14 is the biggest engagement day of the year, but did you know Feb.13 is the biggest break-up day of the year? If you find yourself celebrating on Feb. 13, this song is probably for you. I first heard this song in middle school as a twelve-year-old watching “High School Musical 2,” and I have to say that to this day, it’s still the best breakup song I’ve heard. Its lyrics not only name every cliche in the book (example: “I never wanted to hurt you”), but it’s an actual dialogue between the dumper and the dumpee. If you don’t want to play this in the background of your break up speech, at least steal a few lines from the lyrics; I can’t say I haven’t done it.

Every year, we publish a Valentine’s Day edition of our Voice section in order to bring the spirit of love to campus. We’re excited to bring you a number of articles (some serious, some satirical) dedicated to sex, relationships, the history of Valentine’s Day and more.

Should you plan to celebrate this day of romance with someone, be sure to stay safe and practice healthy sexual habits – and if you’re planning on cuddling up alone or with friends to watch movies and eat discount chocolates, that works perfectly, too. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to have fun.
