At a press conference on Monday, Bradley University administrators announced plans to make major renovations to the Business and Engineering Convergence Center (BECC).
However, these renovations will not happen inside the building. Instead, the BECC itself is on the move. According to a university memo, the academic building will be placed “four feet to the left of where it currently resides.”
“Yeah, we’re pretty much just gonna pick it up and put it back down,” said project supervisor William Williams. “We’re just not a big fan of where it is right now.”
Bradley plans to reach out to students for assistance moving the BECC, hoping to encourage participation by offering each student who helps a chance to play for a minute during a Bradley men’s basketball game.
When asked about the incentive, head coach Brian Wardle seemed puzzled.
“They did what?” he asked. “Uhh… no?”
Williams didn’t think Wardle’s concern was particularly substantiated.
“It’s only gonna take like six or seven people to move the building,” the supervisor said. “It’s not that big of a deal.”
The issue with the building’s current location was a topic of conversation, and one The Scoop struggled to get a straight answer on.
“Well, I mean, just look at it,” said Williams. “If you can’t see the issue, I don’t know how to explain it to you, frankly. It’s just wrong.”
The university was unwilling to commit to the cardinal direction in which the building would move. When asked whether the “left” referenced in the memo was from the perspective of the front or back of the building, Williams didn’t seem to know.
“Uh, y’know, it’ll be… yeah,” said Williams. “It’ll definitely be to the left. I can tell you… You know what, I’ll get back to you on that. I’m pretty sure it’ll be… left. Definitely left.”
The university plans to carry out the process on Feb. 30 of next year. Volunteers can sign up to help with the process here.
