Editorial: Bradley speaks out against discrimination

Since The Scout published an article regarding the ethnic discrimination allegation filed by Bradley student Abraham Barrantes against associate professor Bob Podlasek, we have received two letters to the editor from two academic departments. They are in support of Barrantes and for making a more inclusive campus environment. We have also received several comments on social media about this allegation. The conversation we have seen on campus the past week has been incredible. We would like to recognize the department of history and the department of world languages and cultures for voicing their opinions and doing what they can to create a more welcoming atmosphere at Bradley.Despite this specific allegation, both department letters, and the email sent out by President Gary Roberts last Thursday mentioned that everyone should be held accountable to create a diverse and inclusive environment at Bradley. We salute the offer made by the department of history to contribute their funding to embrace diversity on campus and inviting other departments to participate. We are interested by how these funds could be used to make the campus more inclusive. Your voice has power.

We encourage all members of the Bradley community to utilize appropriate ways and channels to express their opinion, not just about discrimination but on all issues. A Letter to the Editor is certainly a great way to do so. You can submit your letter, via email to Editor@BradleyScout.com, direct messages to The Scout social media accounts, by mail or dropped to our office in Sisson Hall 319 or they can be submitted on our website at https://BradleyScout.com. All letters must include your name and your return address or email, and cannot exceed 500 words. Letters must be received by Tuesday at 5 p.m. to be included in the following Friday publication.
