Men’s Basketball
Player of the Year: Darrell Brown
For the second year in a row, junior guard Darrell Brown has led the Braves in points and assists. Brown averaged 15.0 points per game, one of the top scorers in the Missouri Valley Conference and was named to Second Team All-MVC. Brown also led the team in 3-point percentage, increasing his percentage by 11 percent.
Newcomer of the Year: Ja’Shon Henry
At the beginning of the year, head coach Brian Wardle compared freshman Ja’Shon Henry to a young Charles Barkley. Like the Hall of Famer, Henry brought an explosive skill set to both ends of the floor. Henry led all BU freshmen in minutes, points, rebounds and steals.
Most Improved Player: Luqman Lundy
A season after not starting at all, senior Luqman Lundy started in 16 games for the Braves. He earned career highs and improved in every major statistical category. In the last regular season game against Loyola, he earned a spot on the SportsCenter Top-5 for a highflying poster dunk over Lucas Williamson.
Women’s Basketball:
Player of the Year: Gabi Haack
Haack led the team in scoring with 15.3 points per game, recorded a 3-pointer in 15 consecutive games and led the team in assists. The sophomore also led the team in 3-point shooting at 36 percent, and as an aggressive force, got to the line and coverted 83 percent of her free throws.
Newcomer of the Year: Lasha Petree
The freshman from Detroit earned five MVC Newcomer of the Week Awards and averaged the most points for a freshman in the MVC this season. She recorded the third most minutes for the team with 24.6 but only started 12 games. In a notable performance, she willed the team from 17 down to beat Indiana State on Feb. 8. She scored 13 points and had three steals in 46 seconds.
Most Improved Player: Chelsea Brackmann
Chelsea Brackmann doubled her scoring average from 6.5 to 13.2 points per game. The junior started 28 games this season after only starting 14 last season. She averaged 11.1 rebounds, up from last year‘s total of 6.5 and her increased play allowed her to record 43 steals, 15 more than last season. Brackmann recorded two 20-point 20-rebound games this year and led the conference in rebounding.
