In the spirit of Halloween, the Scout Sports Staff has picked the scariest all-time NFL team to face.
1985 Chicago Bears
By Ethan Diamond
Many teams throughout the NFL’s 100-year history have been scary to face, but nobody has usurped the dominant 1985 Chicago Bears.
One of the greatest defenses in NFL history, the “Monsters of the Midway” lived up to that moniker by domineering over everyone in their path. After a 15-1 regular season, the Bears didn’t surrender a single point in the postseason until the Super Bowl.
Even after giving up 10 to the Patriots, they still won the game by 36.
Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, Mike Singletary and Dan Hampton are just a few of the names on that historic defense. The offense can’t be ignored, anchored by one of the league’s all-time greatest running backs, Walter Payton, and coached by another highly regarded football figure, Mike Ditka.
Other teams can be argued, but come on, the ‘85 Bears are the scariest NFL team to grace the league.
1969 Minnesota Vikings
By Ian Manley
This era of Vikings football earned the nickname “The Purple People Eaters” for a reason. Their defense – especially the defensive line – was legendary. They won 12 straight games, an NFL record at the time, with their only two regular-season losses coming when starting quarterback Joe Kapp was injured.
That iconic defensive line of Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall and Gary Larsen swallowed up opposing running backs and quarterbacks, leaving only devastation in their wake. Look up any highlight from that year and you’ll see why they only allowed two offensive touchdowns against them.
If anyone managed to get a throw off, that usually didn’t end well either. Cornerback Bobby Bryant had eight interceptions in 12 games, and the team finished second in takeaways. The offense had little difficulty, leading the league in total points under Kapp’s measured leadership. He kept the team together and had them play as a unit, even including him turning down a team MVP award because, “there are 40 most valuable Vikings”.
Sportswriters and journalists constantly rank this Vikings team among the best to never win a Super Bowl, and it’s easy to see why. Despite featuring multiple future Hall of Famers on the roster, no single person shared the spotlight. They won together, lost together and, most importantly, they terrorized the competition.
2025 Seattle Seahawks
By Jake Aimone
When people hear the word darkside, their thoughts can go in a number of directions.
Many immediately think “Star Wars.” Others might think of the far side of the moon, or start rocking out to Pink Floyd’s album, “The Dark Side of the Moon.”
Recently, a new group has joined the ranks: Mike Macdonald’s Seattle defense.
Since taking over as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks in 2024, Macdonald has built the next nightmarish defensive squad in Seattle: The Darkside.
In just his second year as head coach, Macdonald and his relentless unit overwhelmed the league on their way to the Seahawks’ second Super Bowl.
Allowing only a league-best 17.2 points per game, the Hawks soared to victory as they imposed their will on everyone they faced.
Not to mention, the Seahawks had nightmares on offense. Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker terrorized defenses every chance they got.
While Smith-Njigba scythed through secondaries to a league-leading 1,793 receiving yards, Walker’s breakneck speed left defenders praying they could make contact in the backfield.
For opposing teams, it wasn’t a matter of when the Seahawks would torment them on the field; it was a matter of who.
2013 Seattle Seahawks
By Cooper Smith
The 2013 Seattle Seahawks were a living nightmare, considered one of the best defenses ever while also having one of the scariest offenses.
The defense allowed only 20 touchdowns all season. For context, quarterback Russell Wilson threw more passing touchdowns than opponents scored touchdowns.
This defense had the primes of Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor, three of the most talented defensive backs since the turn of the millennium. They had a secondary who could hit you so hard, the average person would probably go into a coma if hit by one of the three.
They also had star running back Marshawn Lynch. Nicknamed “Beast Mode,” Lynch ran for 1,257 yards and 12 touchdowns. Wide receivers Doug Baldwin and Golden Tate complemented Wilson’s strong play in his second season at the time.
Seattle’s defense eventually held the greatest offense ever, led by Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, to eight points in the Super Bowl. With Denver having the same number of 50-point games as 30-point games, this feat was hard to fathom at the time. The offense backed that performance by scoring 43 points to win the Super Bowl, where Malcom Smith won Super Bowl MVP.
In interviews after that season, players were still shaking, especially at that Legion of Boom Defense. This Seahawks team is indeed the scariest of all time.
2024 Philadelphia Eagles
By Cooper Newmark
The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles were the scariest team to play in NFL history. They were the most complete team – a team with no weaknesses. Super Bowl MVP quarterback, dominant running back, two ace receivers, the best offensive line and a top 10 defense.
Despite starting the season 2-2, they went on to never lose a game Jalen Hurts played in, finishing 14-0.
The Eagles won two games with two different backup quarterbacks, illustrating the team’s insane depth.
They had a running back with the most combined rushing yards in the regular season and playoffs. They had the second-best defense in the NFL in points allowed per game, with 17.8. That, combined with the eighth-ranked offense in yards per game, is a spooky combo.
Yet this team shined in the postseason.
The literal first play of the playoffs for the Eagles was a fumble recovery against the Packers. The closest the Eagles came in the playoffs was a six-point win over the Rams.
They followed up that scare by scoring 95 points over the next two games, setting the record for the most combined points in a conference championship game and a Super Bowl.
Philadelphia faced the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the team that won the past two Super Bowls. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were up 40-6. The Eagles went into halftime with the second-largest halftime lead in Super Bowl history.
Philadelphia’s first-half effort in the Super Bowl produced more points than the defense allowed in a single game during the entire playoffs.
In all of NFL history, the team with the most points in a single playoff run is the 2024 Eagles.
The 2024 Eagles were the scariest team to face in NFL history.
2007 New England Patriots
By Mark Wagner
Many of these picks focus mainly on defense, like the ‘85 Bears and the ‘69 Vikings, but when it comes to the scariest team to face on both sides, no one comes close to the 2007 New England Patriots.
One statistic that proves this is that they’re the only team in NFL history to win 18 games, and despite not winning the Super Bowl that year, they didn’t lose a single game before then.
To start with, any team that has Tom Brady under center is automatically a scary opponent, but when you pair him with one of the greatest wide receivers of all time in Randy Moss, who also led the league with 23 receiving touchdowns, that’s a nightmare that no one in the history of football would ever want. Add another 1,000-yard receiver in Wes Welker, and you have the equation for one of the best receiving duos of the 21st century.
Even though the highlight of this team was its offense, the Patriots had stars everywhere on defense, led by Vince Wilfork’s intimidating presence on the defensive line, Asante Samuel’s lockdown coverage and six interceptions in the secondary, and Mike Vrabel’s 77 tackles and 12.5 sacks at outside linebacker.
It seems like every great team is either heavily offensive or defensive, but if we’re talking about star power at almost every position with results to back it up, the ‘07 Patriots cannot be topped.
