The debate on climate change will heat up when field expert Donald Wuebbles comes to campus Sept. 22.
Wuebbles, a professor of atmospheric sciences, will conduct a lecture titled “Our Changing Climate: The 2014 U.S. National Climate Assessment.” The lecture will be in Olin Hall 168 at 7:30 p.m.
Organized by international studies program, this lecture will showcase Wuebbles’ years of knowledge concerning the controversial issue of climate change, which is described by the Environmental Protection Agency as “any significant change in the measures of climate lasting for an extended period of time.”
Through his research, Wuebbles has not only determined that Earth’s ever-changing climate is greatly affecting yearly severe weather, but has pin-pointed a direct cause of the main issue itself.
“The evidence is strong that human activities are driving major changes in our climate,” Wuebbles said during a 2013 interview with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. “Therefore, we [human beings] do need to respond.”
Wuebbles’ work has earned him many accolades, including being named the Harry E. Preble Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and receiving the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the international Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
