SERVE teams up with greeks for service event

This past weekend, SERVE and greek life teamed up for “All Greeks Give Back”, a special Service on Saturday event April 12.

Both greek and non-greek students volunteered their services in the Peoria and surrounding communities. A total of 335 students volunteered at 21 different locations.

Some of the locations included tornado relief in Washington, refurbishing a house from 1918, staging an Easter egg hunt and working at a local animal shelter.

This is the first time these organizations teamed up for a large-scale event, and it is was the largest Service on Saturday in three years.

With so many students willing to volunteer, the sites committee for SERVE made sure there would be enough places for each student to participate.

“We’re excited to further our involvement with greek life and we would like to foster partnerships like this with other groups on campus as well,” senior and SERVE member Caitlyn Mayhorn said.

Senior and SERVE member Chloe Vezinaw also participated in the event as a site leader at the Peoria Park District’s Easter egg hunt where she dressed up as the Easter bunny.

“Doing service is an experience unlike any other,” she said. “It brings joy to all parties involved with the devotion of a small amount of time.”

SERVE works to unite Bradley organizations, individual students and community members.

The idea for combining the groups for the event developed as a way of merging the efforts of SERVE and the greek community, according to Panhellenic Council service and philanthropy chair Linda Zack.

“The idea came about from Tom Coy [Director of Student Services], and I spoke with my IFC counterpart Ryan Gutchewsky about integrating Greek life with other Bradley organizations,” Zack said.

Zack said on behalf of greek life and SERVE, she and Gutchewsky would like to thank everyone who came out for the event.

“Service is one of the best ways to attain our [philanthropic] goal, and this event was a perfect opportunity to merge our efforts,” she said.
