As the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day games approach, it feels time to consider the best day of the year to watch sports. This week, The Scout sports staff gave their opinions on the greatest day to be a sports fan.

July 4

By Cristina Solano

Nothing is more patriotic than watching sports on Independence Day. Major League Baseball has high-profile matchups since it’s the middle of the summer, which tends to be the prime time for the teams.

Sports are a great way to feel connected to that national identity. Many people on Independence Day have the day off from work, which increases event gatherings. Then, of course, sporting events at night have to conclude with a fireworks show. It’s a great way to celebrate your favorite team’s victory at the stadium or in the comfort of your backyard.

The Sports Equinox

By Jacob Hypke

The best day is The Sports Equinox, an annual day for all four major US sports. This year’s edition of the Equinox also featured the MLS Cup playoffs, which were played on Oct. 28. You could watch whatever sport you preferred. However, most people were watching game three of the World Series.

The Equinox allows fans to watch every sport they love in one night and offers

stakes. It’s also one of the most bet-on days of the year. Sportsbooks offer boosts for users to bet on all sports all night. Thanksgiving and Christmas require the person to choose between family and sports. March Madness’ early start time requires the person to choose between school or work. Every game on the Equinox starts at night on a non-holiday, so you don’t have to sacrifice anything.

New Year’s Day

OWEN DIMPFL

It doesn’t get much better than New Year’s Day for sports because of the variety of action. The NBA and college basketball are at the heart of their seasons, with teams solidifying their standing in each conference. Before the NFL extended to 17 regular-season games, the first weekend of the new year was incredible for the start of the playoffs with the Wild Card games. Week 18 now occupies that weekend, though the excitement is still palpable as teams face elimination or playoff-clinching scenarios between division rivals.

But the biggest reason New Year’s Day is amazing in sports is related to college football. The New Year’s Six bowl games are the biggest college football games and if a team played on Jan. 1, they had a successful season. Even though the new CFP layout has hurt these bowl games, there are still good matchups in fun atmospheres around the country.

Christmas

By Latif Love

I stopped believing in Santa at a very young age, so as a child, the only thing I looked forward to was Christmas Day basketball games. Whether it was Dwayne Wade or LeBron’s alley-oops, Derrick Rose game-winners or the colorful and creative jerseys that teams have created in the past, Christmas Day is one of the best parts of the season for NBA fans.

In recent years, the NBA has dropped the ball with scheduling and building up the hype for Christmas. The jerseys have become significantly worse, and the matchups are stale and often end in blowouts. On the off chance that Adam Silver is reading this entry, I beg you to fix Christmas Day for the sake of NBA fans.

Thanksgiving

By Steffen White

Thanksgiving is the best day of the sports year, bar none. Thanksgiving football has been a staple for decades. However, it doesn’t end there. We will have a full slate of college hoops to watch, featuring non-conference matchups that will go along great with the smell of your feast cooking.

To start the evening, Florida and Wake Forest clash in North Carolina. There will also be a matchup of two final four teams from last season, Purdue vs. NC State. Arkansas vs. Illinois features two teams that figure to contend for a national title this season. While the matchups are not set, fans can enjoy the second round of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament featuring teams such as Indiana, Gonzaga, and Arizona. While it is very important to cherish the food and people that Thanksgiving brings together, keep your attention on the television and enjoy the best sporting day of the year.
