Active Minds, a student organization that promotes mental health awareness, hosted a paint jam event on Wednesday to help students relieve stress from the week.

The event offered students the chance to either paint, color, play board games or simply socialize with other students.

A variety of activities were available, such as tote bag decorating, painting canvases, filling in coloring pages and playing card games.

The paint jam served as a way to help students relax and release stress from the week in anticipation of finals.

Miracle McClendon, Active Minds president and senior nutrition and dietetics major, said spending time with friends in a social setting can be relaxing for students overwhelmed with projects and final assignments.

Active Minds strives to use art as a way of helping students relax and socialize with their peers.

The paint jam granted this opportunity, allowing students to express themselves and help them deal with anything they might be going through.

“When you’re doing art, you are able to express your own creativity,” McClendon said. “This can kind of take our mind away from the daily stressors as well as giving them a form to cope with life.”

Active Minds is looking to further address mental health issues on campus.

“Active Minds wants to continue to advocate for students on campus,” McClendon said. “Something that we’re currently still working on is the mental health day petition.”

More information regarding the organization can be found on its Instagram page.
